Laurence Silverman Shares About Working with Rebuilding Together Long Island

Since early April, I have been working with my charity, Rebuilding Together
Long Island (RTLI), to complete improvements on a local home for delinquent
youths. RTLI believes in neighbors helping neighbors, and has been working
for 25 years to improve and revitalize the neighborhoods of Long Island.
We donate labor and materials to make repairs and improvements to the
homes of low-income residents, creating a safer, stronger environment.
Last year, we were able to help over 132 residents and non-profit facilities,
and we look forward to making 2017 an even better year for our Long Island
neighbors.
The house has been a hive of activity as we’ve worked to renovate
it. We removed all old, dirty wall-to-wall carpeting in 6 bedrooms and
the common room. To replace it, we have nearly finished laying laminate
flooring throughout the house, including all the bedrooms and all the
common spaces. We're also repairing unsafe staircases, installing
new doors for most of the bedrooms, and repairing sheet rock walls. It’s
been its own rewarding challenge as we watch the house start to turn into
the space we’d envisioned it to be.
Working on these projects gives me such a great feeling of purpose in life;
I take great pleasure thinking about the positive results of my efforts
and those of my colleagues. Over the years, I’ve learned that I
would not be happy if I could not be helpful in one way or another. Working
with RTLI has helped me fulfill the need to help others, and I am proud
to continue my support for this organization.
